Final Assignment

1. Write an artist's statement that is an overview of your work in this class -- place your work in context to work we've looked at (or work you saw at galleries or online). Consider the examples we looked at to articulate where you see your work going in the future (real world examples).

2. Present your thoughts in as a short oral presentation next week, supported by any visuals you can provide (even if just your own work).

Make-up class details

Okay, so it seemed next to impossible to synch up everyone's availability for a make-up class, so I've decided to fold a "self-guided field trip" into everyone's final assignment.

SO -- I'd like each of you to go to a show in the area that showcases some sort of time-based work. Look for how the curators and artists present themselves via wall statements, artist's statements, catalog statements. You will be drafting your own class statements which describe your own work from this class as your final assignment.

I mentioned the show at the LIST GALLERY at MIT. Other options include the current show at the AXIOM GALLERY in Jamaica Plain and the Acting Out show at the ICA. Perhaps you can find something else?

List and AXIOM are free, ICA is not (but you should get a student discount).

I would go to whichever venue is most convenient (again you are making up a two hour class, so you shouldn't have to spend most of that time shlepping around).

Assignment for June 2

1. Export your video into a compressed format based on the discussion in class.

2. Upload video to the web (blip.tv, Youtube, etc.)

3. Cross-post or link to your video from our class blog.

4. Bring all of your working materials to class (storyboards, script, etc) -- please collect loose sheets in some sort of folder/binder/envelope.

5. Bring optional snacks for yourself for the big screening of next week. (sign of the recession -- I can't bring snacks anymore!)

Assignment for May 12

1. Think of a story that demonstrates a "simple task".

2. Write a short story treatment and post on the class blog (no more than one page). No images, just text. Tag your post with "assignment_treatment".

3. In anticipation of next week's class, where you will storyboard your treatment, view these shot types.

4. If you have any kind of equipment that can capture video, bring it in (video camera, small digital camera, phone).

Assignment for April 28

1. If you haven't gone to see the exhibit at the McMullen, do so. Write a post on the class blog with your reactions. Tag them as "mcmullen".

2. If you haven't been tagging your posts with your appropriate class tags (ie. '315' or '530', please do so).

3. Create an assemblage of your images in one of the following formats:

• Collage or multiple image composition(s)
• Book (artist's book or not)
• Presentation (slide show)
• Surprise me!

Assignment for April 21st

1. If you haven't completed all three parts of the first assignment, do so.

2. Extend your single composed image into a sequene of multiple images (at least 5, at most 20). Bring into class to work with (on a USB drive or CD or DVD).

3. In the next two weeks go see the show "The Book as Art" at the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College and write a post about your reaction (tagged 'assignment_mcmullen') Remember to add your class specific tags.

Assignment for April 14th

1. Sign onto class blog -- leave a comment on this post to confirm that you are "in"

2. Read through the following Navy manual (yes!) -- on image composition. It's many pages, but can be skimmed through pretty quickly.

3. Create a (single) composed photograph based on the theme of 'transformation'. Create a new, original work -- not something done by someone else or something you did earlier, but something you are creating for this class.
